Arion Carter's suspension went from two games to one. The number that changed is not the interesting part — which game it hands back is, and it happens to be the only one in Tennessee's first month the model cannot call.

Two games would have been Furman and Georgia Tech. One is Furman. That is the whole change, and it is worth more than a halved suspension normally would be, because those two games are nothing alike.

The stat everyone will reach for, and why it is worthless
He missed 3 games last season, so there is an obvious temptation: compare the defense with him and without him. Do it naively and you get a result nobody wants to print — Tennessee allowed 30.2 points per game with Carter on the field and 24.3 without him.
That number is an artifact of a schedule, not a finding about a player. One of the games he missed was New Mexico St, who scored 9 points and ran for 27 yards. Remove that single game and the split inverts completely.

Strip out one overmatched opponent and the two remaining games he missed gave up 32.0 points and 183.5 rushing yards a game — both worse than the average game he played in. Which is the opposite conclusion, drawn from the same 3 games, by removing one opponent.
That is the point. The with-and-without split cannot answer this question in either direction. 3 games, no control for opponent, and a result that flips on the inclusion of one FCS-caliber team. Anyone quoting it — to argue he is essential or that he is not — is quoting noise.

What can actually be said
Not how many points one linebacker is worth. Nobody can derive that honestly from 13 games, and this site is not going to invent a number for it.
What is on the record is the shape of the matchup. Georgia Tech ran the ball on 55.1% of their snaps in 2025 and averaged 203.0 rushing yards a game on 36.3 carries — a genuinely run-first offense, not a balanced one. Tennessee's defense allowed 158.7 rushing yards a game across the same season.

That is the argument for why this particular game is the one you would least like to be short a starting linebacker in — not a with-and-without split, but the fact that the opponent's identity runs directly through the position in question.
The case against calling it huge
Tennessee is not thin here, and the honest version of this piece has to say so. The two linebackers who finished ahead of Carter in tackles last season are both back, and the roster currently lists 10 linebackers, Carter among them. A room absorbing one absence for one week is a very different proposition from a defense missing its only answer.
So: getting Carter back for Georgia Tech is worth something real, and it is worth considerably less than the same headline would be at a program with no depth behind him. Both of those are true.
